PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue
The day Pantone reveals the colour of the year has become one of the most anticipated in the world of colour
and print. After much speculation over the past weeks, Pantone has announced their choice, putting an end to
the mystery. The colour of the year for 2020 is…drum roll, please…Classic Blue (Pantone 19-4052). The restful
colour is also known as “honest” outside of the printing world and is thought to be the perfect shade to offer
some tranquility in amongst any chaos.

The meaning behind Classic Blue
During this past year, there has been innumerous situations of hostility all over the planet, including a spike in global warming, politics at headlock, and sad traumas; Pantone’s aim is to spread much needed peace and tranquility through the power (and psychology) of colour. Classic Blue’s intent is to recentre thoughts evoking the positive feeling of reassurance.
The influence of Pantone’s Colour of the Year
In 2000, Pantone nominated their chosen colour as the ‘Colour of the Year’. Fast forward and the event has become a tradition that impacts businesses in all industries, from interior design and fashion to product packaging and graphic design. The colour of the year hugely influences upcoming trends so it’s no wonder why so many professionals of all areas keep their eyes peeled to find out the next pick.
Selection process of Pantone’s Colour of the Year
As you can imagine, a massive amount of research and thought goes into deciding the Colour of the Year. At Pantone offices, a team of colour experts sift through trends all over the world, searching for new influences. They also consider the impact on multiple industries, from film and entertainment, art and fashion to travel and lifestyle - encompassing all aspects of the design industry.

Two factors that might prevent you from achieving your desired colour is if you choose to apply any special finishes to your print and if you have only ever viewed you artwork in RGB. When special finishes such as matt lamination are placed over your print, they will have an impact on the tactility of your print as well as muting the colour beneath it. Do remember that different laminations deliver different results, be sure to pick the one that works for you and your artwork. When it comes to RGB, you may or may not know that a computer screen will display your artwork in RGB, even if the file is set up in CMYK. Therefore what you see on your screen is not necessarily how you have set up your artwork file for print. Don’t think you can get around this issue by supplying am RGB file though, commercial printers require files to be set up in CMYK for printing and so the file would need to be converted from RGB to CMYK before printing can commence.
